Listening Ear is an ambitious and growing social enterprise and its adult service is accredited by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy. Specialising in providing open age therapeutic support for mild to moderate mental health issues, the children’s service has a particular focus on pre- bereavement, bereavement, family breakdown and loss.

Knowsley Council have commissioned Listening Ear to provide free at the point of delivery training to teaching staff within Knowsley schools to assist them in supporting children and young people experiencing domestic abuse in the home.

By providing this vital training, a child or young person is more likely to receive early targeted help and support following an incident and those working with children and young people will feel more skilled and confident in using the tool kit and in the process of offering support. This is then more likely to lead to positive outcomes for more children and provide the opportunity for recovery. This training builds on the original training delivered by Listening Ear and uses the toolkit provided to Knowsley schools.

The learning outcomes for the training are:

  • Recognise symptoms of domestic abuse and the roles children and young people may adopt.
  • Understand the wide ranging impacts on children and young people’s emotional health and wellbeing
  • Develop a range of strategies and interventions to address children and young people’s needs.
  • Increased confidence in supporting children and young people affected by domestic abuse.
  • To promote resilience in children and young people who have been exposed to domestic abuse and support the development of their positive coping strategies.
  • To look at potential risk and create shared safety planning
  • To look at the workbook tool kit previously provided and to give CYP professionals confidence in using the resource and ideas on how to use it for other issues.

Please note that this course is for staff of Knowsley secondary schools and only 1 place can be assigned initially to each school. Additional members of staff will be placed on a waiting list.
